When I began to design and construct blanks in 1999, I set as my goal to build the most user friendly rods that I could. I believe that The UltraWave is the best result of that quest yet.

I believe that if we always think about fly rods as they’ve been built since the beginning of time then we’re always going to get the same kind of rods that we’ve always gotten. Until we change the way we think about what is acceptable as far as performance is concerned then we’ll never progress. We have gotten just about all of the performance value out of the materials that we use today to build rods, so the only possible evolution in the industry is to use these materials in some new way to gain more advantage from the properties that we began using them for.

The UltraWave is an entirely new concept in blank building. The concept is so innovative yet so simple that we’ve patented it. For the first time in history (near as we’ve been able to find out) we’re building a rod on a blank that is intentionally curved. Not once but twice. It’s close to a natural sine wave. For those of you that aren’t into the physics thing, waves are the most efficient mode of movement in nature. Sound does it. Light does it. Water does it. Electricity does it. See where I’m headed? Because the blank has curvature, it is to some extent preloaded before you even move it. And when you do move it, it transfers more energy from your arm to the line. It’s just simply a more efficient power transfer mechanism. You will throw tighter loops and achieve the same distance with less work. That should also equate to longer distances overall. Kind of every fly fishers holy grail. The UltraWave, like any other rod develops no power or energy on it’s own. It is just a carbon fiber stick that lays there until you tell it what to do. But, when you do tell it to do something, it responds better than any other rod on the market today.

Now, we also have to change the way we think about how a fly rod does what we tell it to do and how to tell it to do so. Up to this point all rods have been non-planar, which means that to a great extent they would do what they do pretty much in any direction. They aren’t very efficient. The vertical curvature in the UltraWave blank pretty much dictates that it is going to work for you best in that plane. Testing has shown that it works pretty well at three quarter arm and side arm and every which arm. But, it by far works most efficiently when you point your reel at your target. The rod will mend line and perform rotational casts well also but you have to keep in mind that to work at peak efficiency one must stay on plane. As with any innovation we have to adjust. We can’t gain ground if we continue to think the same old way. And a small rotation of the wrist shouldn’t be too hard for anyone to learn.

The UltraWave is a performance rod. When we designed and fleshed this rod out, performance was the utmost consideration. It is a beautiful rod, but not, perhaps in the way we are accustomed to looking at pretty. Compared to most fly rods today it is pretty Spartan esthetically. There are no fancy wraps, no feathers or inlays, no paint. None of the things that make a rod look good sitting on a shelf and add weight. We’ve used sealers and finish materials sparingly. We’ve used the best and lightest guides on the market today. We’ve used the lightest (and prettiest) skeleton reel seat we could find. We’ve even used a sycamore reel seat spacer because it’s light and still has some character. When you build a performance race car, you take everything out of it that isn’t necessary to make it go fast. That’s what we’ve done with this rod. We’ve cut the fat. In doing so we’ve come up with a series of the lightest performance rods ever made. The 9’ 5 weight 2 piece rod weighs in at 3.7 ounces. If you are looking for peak performance, look for UltraWave.
